This landmark on the only hill in Bangkok is of great significance for followers of Buddhism. Pilgrims walk up the 344 steps in order to worship the Buddha relic enshrined in the pagoda on the top of the Golden Mount. The relic was given to Siam (Thailand’s former name) by the government of India in the reign of King Rama V.
The 100 meter high Golden Mount is located on a man-made hill 500 meters in diameter. Originally, there was a small bell-shaped stupa on this site but after it collapsed, King Rama III commissioned the construction of a much larger one which was completed in the reign of King Rama V.
Follow the steps that wrap around the Golden Mount and you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of old Bangkok.
The temple is also famous for the temple fair held every year in November (1).
