This very well maintained war cemetery contains the remains of 6,982 Allied prisoners of war who perished during the construction of the infamous “Death Railway”. Its tranquillity still reminds visitors of the war and its aftermath.
During 2nd World War, the Japanese Army occupied many parts of Southeast Asia, including Thailand. In 1942 they planed to built a train track from Thailand to Myanmar to accommodate the transfer of troops, supplies, and weapons.
Prisoners of war and Asian citizens were the main labour for the railway construction. Many of them died of diseases or illnesses caused by long working hours and malnutrition.
The construction of this railway had costed more than 100,000 lives.
