Selection / Attractions / Bangkok / Hua Lamphong to Makkasan
Starting point is Bangkok's central station, Hua Lamphong. The station was opened on 25 June 1916, after six years' construction. The site of the railway station was previously the national railway's maintenance centre, which moved to Makkasan in June 1910. The station was built in an Italian Neo-Renaissance style, with decorated wooden roofs and stained glass windows. After a short walkaround at the station we will board the train towards Makkasan station.
During the train ride we will see only a glimpse of the slums beside the railway. The contrast is huge, slums in the middle of a modern city. When we get out at Makkasan station we will continue by foot and explore the slums. You will have a great chance to chat with the people and see their living conditions. It is unkown how long we can organize this tour. Unfortunately the slums will be removed in favor of big shopping malls near the new railway link to the airport. Makkasan is part of Bangkok as long as people can remember. The chances are small that its citizens will become slumdog millionaires, their compensation will be small for moving in favor of a multi million dollar shopping complex. This might be your last chance to explore this amazing area.
This tour will only be organized for small groups of less then 4 people. This tour may not be suitable for small children.
